Great photos!! There’s nothing like the visual (and aromatic) impact of a few hectares of flowering fruit trees flowing over the fertile fields of our fortune-favoured enclave!
I noticed that one of the photos is identified as an ornamental cherry. Best to keep in mind that Japanese flowering cherries are illegal to grow in the Penticton area because they can carry little-cherry virus, an extremely important pathogen of sweet cherry trees. From the BC agriculture website:
“Japanese flowering cherries are symptomless carriers of the little cherry virus. For this reason, it is illegal to grow these ornamental cherries in the Okanagan, Similkameen or Creston Valleys.”
Since so many of the remaining orchards are sweet cherries, best to be kind and remove any of these ornamental trees you may be harbouring. Just ask the Van Westen family how devastating a little-cherry virus infection can be in a mature cherry block!! There was quite an outbreak here about 25 yrs ago, unfortunately largely forgotten now.
